When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “See, I have come to do your will.” He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
The Law given to Moses required repeated sacrifices of animals, whose blood provided a temporary cleansing of sin for God’s worshipers. There has never been a more stunning and profound act of love offered to humankind than when God chose for Jesus himself to become the sacrifice through which we would be made holy, once for all time. Just as Jesus sat down at the Father’s right hand, we too can enter a rest from performance and striving to earn a freedom that is already ours!

Lord, thank you for the life changing gift you offered your people as you ushered in the new covenant by way of Jesus’ death. Thank you that His resurrection life lives in and through us, allowing us to also extend lavish grace and forgiveness to others. Amen.
