An Ordinary Leaf

At the Session retreat on Saturday, Jeff led us in a spirituality exercise after lunch. The exercise had us look at common objects from nature (leaves, flowers, rocks, sticks) and see how God was speaking to us through them. I heard a poem from my leaf.

leafAn Ordinary Leaf
intricately woven
not in the depths
but in the air

fragile, yet sturdy
it catches the sun
and grows.
it catches the rain
and shimmers.
it catches the win
and dances.
it catches the light
and dapples.

torn, but whole
it is life
and gives life
it is separate
and part of something
its height is
balanced
by roots that grow
deep
drawing from untold
sources.

but it cannot be
for long
on its own.
